Enzymatic technologies for decontamination of feedstocks for HVO production

Abstract: Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) production continues to expand rapidly across the globe. Lipid based feedstocks ranging from seed oils, animal fats, waste oils as well as new sources of lipids are in scope to match the growing demand. Vegetable oils have the largest potential to supplement the demand. However, flexibility to process diverse feedstocks and blends thereof to match HVO technology requirements and limitations is a must have competitive advantage. Different feedstocks present different challenges for HVO producers as there are a variety of contaminants associated with each lipid feedstock. While vegetable oils contain high levels of phospholipids, containing phosphorus and metals, animal fats and waste oils may contain high levels of FFA, chlorides, etc. Implementation of enzymatic processes gives HVO producers flexibility to process vegetable oils and their blends in existing or retrofit processing units with very low phosphorus and total metal levels while maintaining high yields in reduced chemical and water usage. Additionally, enzymatic processes are key to convert high FFA/TAN waste oils or byproducts into high quality feedstock for HVO production. Further innovation in enzyme technology is boosting process efficiencies and yields while reducing a variety of contaminants and delivering higher profitability.
