Abstract: Flowback aids function as non-emulsifiers, wettability modifiers and surface tension reducers to facilitate the return of fracturing fluid and enhance oil production. Several nonionic and anionic surfactants were evaluated using a simple column technique to identity structure-activity relationships. These consisted of linear and branched alcohols ethoxylated to varying degrees, alkylbenzenesulfonates having alkyl chains of varying lengths and ether carboxylates. Optimal degrees of ethoxylation and alkyl chain lengths, i.e. HLB values, have been identified.
