Abstract: Some vegetable oils obtained by high-temperature screw pressing or solvent extraction contain vegetable waxes. Examples are sunflower seed oil, rice bran oil, corn germ oil, olive pomace oil, and grape seed oil. When these oils are cooled down, the high-melting waxes present in the oil may crystallize. If these kind of oils are stored in a bottle, an unsightly deposit may form on the bottom of the bottle. Consequently, wax removal is considered to be desirable for several oil applications and various processes have been developed to remove waxes from oils - for example sunflower oil. In this presentation the possible process solutions using separators are presented and compared to reduce the wax content in fully refining sunflower oil to reasonable values.
