Abstract: The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) is a trade association that serves the US cleaning products industry's growth and innovation by advancing people's health and quality of life and protecting our planet. One of the ways ACI accomplishes this mission is through the development and use of our publicly available ingredient database. The online database was designed to serve as a resource for accessing and understanding information related to the safety of ingredients used in household cleaning products. For each unique ingredient, chemical hazard data were identified through several public online sources and databases supported by federal and international regulators. Exposures were characterized for each ingredient based on the product types and their typical applications. These findings were then combined to produce a conservative human health and environmental safety screening level risk assessments through transparent models and methodologies. These conservative results can be used to determine if human and environmental risks are anticipated to be negligible or if additional data are required to make a more realistic assessment. ACI sees our ingredient database and assessments as tools that can help the cleaning products industry meet compliance standards like California's SB258 and other state and federal disclosure requirements.
