Abstract: Protein Concentrates are widely used as functional or nutritional ingredients in a variety of food products. These offer sustainable substitutes to meats, animal or fish feed to support growing demand for alternatives to animal-derived proteins. The aim is to support the food demands of a growing world population, relieve land-use pressures and address greenhouse gas concerns associated with the production of traditional animal-based proteins. This paper will outline the latest processing technologies for manufacture of Protein Concentrates from incumbent sources such as Soya but will include new upcoming alternatives in Sunflower, Canola and Hemp Seeds along with solutions to the process challenges they present to existing manufacturing techniques and how they are successfully overcome. We will include current manufacturing developments for maximising plant up-time, yield, product quality, efficiency, emission control and operating costs. Protein Concentrates for Human Consumption and Animal\Aqua Feed will be covered along with the specifics as to how they differentiate in terms of product specification and the key manufacturing steps required to produce each product type. By-Products of the processes will be covered along with their management and potential uses as either a saleable a product or energy source.
