Formulator’s comparative review of modern hydrotropes’ efficacy and performance, with a focus on new bio-renewable and sustainable options, versus traditional commodity chemistries

Abstract: The study compares multiple commercial surfactants functioning primarily as hydrotropes for: solubilization, foam profile, detergency synergism, surface tension, bio-renewable Carbon content, minimum hydrotrope concentration, and alkaline tolerance against traditional workhorse commodity products. The study also examines the utility and efficacy of the modern hydrotropes within typical HI&I cleaning formulations including LDL and HDL hard surface cleaners, hand dish and laundry. The classes of chemistry this study examined were: Sodium alkanoates, fatty acids, alcohol ethoxylates, polyalkyl-glucosides, phosphate esters, Sodium etasulfate, and select Sodium amphoterics.
