Abstract: Expanders for oil seed processing were introduced in the industry from the mid 70´s and since then it turned out to be a very important process step to condition soybeans and soft seeds for a most efficient oil extraction.
Our new generation of Expanders provide significant benefits for the industry, such as de-bottlenecking of the solvent extractor, thus increasing overall capacity, reducing residual oil in the meal, decreasing steam consumption in the DT, homogenize diverse qualities of seeds, accepting even thicker flakes and so much more.
How does our Expanders work? After flaking we expand the flakes and subsequently bring the oil cells to the surface of the product and at the same time process the flakes into a more porous material. Hence we change the bulk density significantly from 0.35 mt/m3 to 0.55 mt/m3, therefore allowing a bigger process capacity in the extractor with diminished residence time.
Due to the consistency of the expanded material the percolation in the solvent extractor is substantially improved, i.e. solvent pours much faster through the material, extracts more oil and thus improves residual oil in the white meal tremendously!
Subsequently, another big advantage of our Expanders is, that the miscella concentration is increased from 25% to more than 30% and thus reduces the steam demand for evaporation of solvent and the following distillation capacity is therefore increased considerably.
The same happens with white meal which is going into the DT and hence less steam is needed in the desolventizing section of the DT.
Another crucial benefit is that our Expanders deactivate soybean ANFs (anti nutritional factors), sustainably, due to proper heating.
Special unique advantages: 1) sophisticated steam distribution 2) special pitch of helicoid 3) unique machine design 4) robustness & reliability
