Impurities complicate the conversion of waste cooking oil into biodiesel. A talk will address removing glycerol by applying a bulk liquid membrane developed from conventional solvent-extraction methods. The session will also examine a single enzymatic reaction capable of fully converting glycerides of crude vegetable oils to fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) while simultaneously reaching < 0.25 weight percent free fatty acid without post-treatment. And a presenter will focus on algae to meet global demand for sustainable aviation fuel and how ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry informs the composition of unidentified lipid derivatives, which are highly dependent on the algae strain.
