Biorenewable Polymers

This session will explore new approaches to meet the demand for safe, renewable, biodegradable polymers. A presenter will focus on efforts to produce antimicrobial, bio-based polymers from agricultural-based non-edible oils, including curing agents that contribute to killing bacteria. A talk will examine a new approach using epoxidized cottonseed oil and cotton to produce a flexible, soft fiber similar to traditional artificial leather. Also, the synthesis of new branched-chain thermoplastic copolymers of poly(acrylated epoxidized high oleic soybean oil), PAEHOSO, with a hydrophilic component, did not require volatile solvents, simplifying scale-up.
