Lead Scientist
US Department of Agriculture / Agricultural Research Service
Peoria, IL, United States
Dr. Gordon Selling is a Lead Scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Peoria Illinois. Over his 20 years with the agency, Dr. Selling has carried out research on developing higher valued products mainly using corn starch and corn protein. He has developed improved products using corn starch. Specifically, he has developed many new uses for amylose inclusion complexes (AIC). These AIC’s have value in many end uses including 1) pesticides, 2) emulsifiers, 3) surface modifiers and 4) polymer blends. These efforts have been supported through a number of different funding opportunities. Materials have been sent to numerous companies around the world. He has also shown that corn protein can be converted into durable fibers and articles. Durability (resistance to solvents) is required for corn protein to enter the various consumer markets. He has also shown that the derivatization of corn protein can be carried out using commercially viable extrusion techniques. Both of these research endeavors have been communicated to industry through CRADA’s, US Patents and scientific journal articles. Prior to working with ARS, he worked for E.I. DuPont for 15 years. During this time, he commercialized numerous new spandex products globally using novel antioxidants and polymers. He has been elected to various leadership positions in international organizations and has been the Division Chair of the Cellulose and Renewable Materials Division of the American Chemical Society.
