Chief Scientist
R W Heiden Associates LLC
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States
Richard Heiden, Ph.D. is an entrepreneurial scientist who provides technical, management and laboratory services to the fats, oils and derivatives industries through his company R. W. Heiden Associates, LLC. This followed nine years of technical leadership positions in industry. After a B.S. in chemistry from Union College in upstate New York his graduate education led to a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His work integrates environmental, microbiological and material chemistry with chemical engineering principles and analytical chemistry.
During the early 1990’s his work became focused on the technical and business challenges associated with the biofuels industry after completion of one of his first biofuel projects: to make biodiesel from waste products. He received a grant from the National Biodiesel Board to help steer the direction of standardized analytical testing of biodiesel, and then worked with agricultural crop developers to assist in the characterization of new
feedstocks for food, feed and fuels. He established a laboratory to address processing and quality concerns in the biofuels, fats and oils industries,
where he now conducts various R and D, and quality investigations. More information can be found at: www.supersleuthchemists.com.
Dr. Heiden has presented and published the technical aspects of analytical and compositional challenges associated with biodiesel at numerous scientific conferences since 2007, and for that reason is well known for that work internationally. He is a member of several professional organizations including ASTM, AIChE, ACS and AOCS.
He currently lives in Lancaster, PA where he also participates in various community volunteer activities ranging from the production of energy
conservation programs for engineers to support for local safety net organizations. He is married with three grown children.
