Dr. Tom Warkentin is a Professor in the Crop Development Centre/Department of Plant Sciences, University of Saskatchewan. He received his Ph.D. in Crop Science from the University of Saskatchewan in 1992. He is breeding field pea cultivars with emphasis on agronomic traits (yield and lodging resistance), disease resistance (foliar and root diseases), tolerance to abiotic stresses (heat and drought), and end-use quality (seed visual quality, seed coat durability, cooking quality, and nutritional quality including concentration of protein, starch, fiber, vitamins and minerals and their bioavailability). He has also conducted research in the area of improving nitrogen fixation in pea. Tom has supervised many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and published on the above topics. Tom is also leading a soybean breeding program addressing the northwestern frontier of North American production.
