Dr. Steven Cermak is with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) and is the Research Leader of the Bio-Oils Research Unit. He earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of Iowa in 1998. He then joined the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) in Peoria, Illinois, in the New Crops Research Unit, first as a Post Doc in 1998 and in 2000 as a Research Chemist. He has co-authored more than 100 publications, which includes 6 patents. He was awarded the 2006 "Researcher of the Year" Award by the Association for the Advancement of Industrial Crops (AAIC). In 2011 and 2016, Dr. Cermak was awarded the Technology Transfer Midwest Region Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer by the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) for his work on estolides. In 2022 he and his team received the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics (REE) Technology Transfer award and in 2023 received the Secretary of Agricultural Honor Award for the advancement of pennycress as a new commercial crop for the United States. Finally, Dr. Cermak received the MWA Senior Research Scientist of the Year Award in April 2023 for his pioneering research promoting sustainability and expanded markets for agricultural commodities via the development of new crops and commercialization of value-added products from vegetable oils.
