Valorization of Glycerol and Fatty Acid Esters

This session will explore the use of plasma irradiation for selective oxidation of glycerol, which is used to produce raw materials for pharmaceutical products. A presenter will explore a series of bioplasticizers (epoxy fatty acid ester estolides) that were synthesized to evaluate their use as phthalate alternatives in PVC applications. Also, five soybean oil–derived fatty acid alkyl ester estolide plasticizers produced good plasticization and mechanical properties. The resulting products were cost-effective with better water vapor barrier functionality.
