Abstract: Trends towards naturally derived, low irritation, 1,4-dioxane free claims have made some widely used surfactants such as alcohol alkoxylates, alkyl sulfates, fall out of favor in personal care, household, and even some industrial cleaning products. However, two major challenges have become roadblocks for new green ingredients to be easily adopted, 1) match chemistry types of surfactants being replaced to avoid compatibility issue in reformulation; 2) deliver performance that matches or even surpasses existing ones.
In the past several years, Colonial Chemical Inc. has introduced a series of naturally derived, mild functionalized alkyl polyglucoside-based surfactants with trade names Suga® and Poly Suga®, to meet the growing demands in Household and Personal Care industries to replace components that contain 1,4-dioxane and/or are highly irritating, such as alcohol alkoxylates, and sulfates. The platform provides a full spectrum of chemistries including anionic, nonionic, amphoteric, and cationic, which enable formulators to replace components of similar chemistry with minimal compatibility issues. Suga®Boost is a new series of high-performance ingredients that leverages synergies of naturally derived components in reducing irritation and matching and even boosting cleaning performance in many household and industrial applications over with traditional surfactants in cleaning hard surfaces, dishes, carpets, kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, and transportation vehicles. Suga®Boost is free of 1,4-dioxane and alkyl sulfates. They also maintain many of the positive characteristics of Suga® and PolySuga® functionalized surfactants, such as mildness and stability in alkalines and acids without need of hydrotropes.
