Abstract: Harmonized, easy to handle methods of analysis, product specifications and requirements with defined patterns and known nomenclatures bring more customers to the market. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO.org) was formed in London in 1946. It is now an independent, non-governmental voluntary consensus standard body based in Geneva, Switzerland with a membership of standard development organizations from 167 nations. The US ISO member is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI.org) a consortium of US standardization organizations. ISO technical committee (TC) 34/subcommittee (SC) 16 was created in 2008 and has 200 experts from 46 participating countries. The secretariat for TC 34/SC 16 was delegated by ANSI to the American Oil Chemist’s Society (AOCS.org). TC 34/SC 16 has published 35 standards with another 4 under development. A list can be found at https://www.iso.org/committee/560239.html. ISO TC 34/SC 16 recently began new work in agricultural biobanking for biotechnology in a joint working group with ISO TC 276 Biotechnology. We will provide more information about ISO TC 34/SC 16 and its new work in biobanking covering how biobanking can affect the production, processing, chemistry, analysis and biotechnology of animal and plant derived proteins, fats and oils.
