The omega-6 and omega-3 debate continues. A talk will explore inconsistent results from major randomized clinical trials with omega-3 fatty acids, which may result from inconsistencies in dose, the nature of the placebos, and background omega-3 intake/blood levels. Another presenter will focus on individual fatty acids and their physiological targets. The session will also explore cross-sectional and prospective studies showing that higher levels of linoleic acid are associated with lower risk for metabolic diseases. Linoleic acid is also the preferred acyl component of cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, resulting in higher mitochondrial respiration.
