Ruchira Nandasiri, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow University of Manitoba and St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre
Ruchira Nandasiri was born and raised in Sri Lanka. In 2004, Ruchira passed the university entrance exam conducted by the Sri Lankan government and graduated with an honors degree in Food Science and Technology at the University of Wayamba in 2009. Ruchira then pursued a master’s degree in Food Chemistry and Nutrition at Dalhousie University under the supervision of Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe from 2010 to 2012. Ruchira’s thesis was primarily on developing a cardio-protective vinegar beverage with blood-pressure-lowering properties. During his tenure at the Dalhousie University Ruchira received the International Student Scholarship from the Rotary Club of Truro and was able to publish his work on many conference platforms. Ruchira started his doctoral degree at the University of Manitoba after moving to Manitoba in 2016 under the guidance of both Dr. Usha Thiyam-Hollander and Dr. Michael Eskin. During his tenure at the University of Manitoba, Ruchira received a number of awards including the Lipid Chemistry and Nutrition award from the American Oil Chemists Society (2022), best Pecha Kucha presenter, at the Manitoba sustainable protein research symposium (2021), sponsored student on the Canadian crops convention (2021), nominee of the processing division student award from the American oil chemists society (2020), Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) student travel award (2019), lipid oxidation and quality division student travel grant by American oil chemist society (2019), emerging leader award, university of Manitoba (2018) as few of the prestigious awards. Ruchira has published over 20 journal publications and three book chapters, and many publications are currently under review/in progress. Ruchira completed his first post-doctoral fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Michael Eskin on the commercialization of antioxidant compounds with the aim of valorizing both canola and mustard as sources of nutraceuticals. He is currently working with Dr. Miyoung Suh on different research projects including potential benefits of Brassica vegetables on prevention of type 2 diabetes, therapeutic properties of mushrooms, and involved in the formula development for improvement of eye health.
